After we finished eating, I helped Jake clean up and then I grabbed my laptop and brought up my design. He brought his chair closer to mine, and for some reason, my heart started racing. Maybe it was from the two beers I downed. Or maybe it was because there was something about him that made me feel different.

“Wait a minute,” he spoke as he got up from his seat. “We can’t do this design without having dessert.”

“None for me. I’m way too full,” I spoke.

“Too full for key lime pie?” He grinned as he held it up in front of me.

My jaw dropped as I stared at it.

“Key lime pie is my favorite.”

“I know, and it’s mine too. Slice?” he asked as his brow arched.

“Definitely.” I smiled. “How did you know that it’s my favorite?”

“Jillian told me.”

“What?” I laughed as I looked at him. “Why would she tell you that?”

“I ran into her at the grocery store one day. I was picking up some steaks because my friend Chandler was coming by and she was at the bakery section. She told me that she was picking up a key lime pie for her sister with the hopes that it would help her feel a little better.”

“I guess she told you a lot about me.” My brows furrowed.

“Not really. She just said some things during our conversations. Neither one of us would have ever imagined that you’d be working for me.”

“I guess.”

He set our slices of pie down on the table and then took his seat.

“Did you make this?” I smirked.

“No.” He chuckled. “There wasn’t time. But, trust me, I’m going to learn how to make one. In fact, maybe one day we can make one together.”

I could feel the heat rise in my cheeks as I bashfully took a bite. He studied my design and I studied his.

“I can see why Jim loved this so much. I love how you added the arches here.” He pointed.

We worked together for a couple of hours and came up with a rough sketch. I glanced at my watch and saw that it was already midnight.

“I better go. It’s already midnight. I honestly didn’t think it was that late.”

“I didn’t either. We can go over the rest of it tomorrow,” he said. “Maybe over lunch.”

“Sounds good. I look forward to it.”

I got up from my chair, grabbed my purse, and Jake followed me to the door.

“Be careful driving home.”

“I will. Thanks again for dinner and for the pie. It was delicious.”

“You’re welcome. Can you do me a favor?”

“Sure. What is it?” I asked.

“Just shoot me a text message when you get home so I know that you arrived safely. It’s really late and all.”

“I will.” I gave him a slight nod.

The whole way home, I felt anxious and I didn’t know why. I felt like I couldn’t calm the hell down. I took in a deep breath as I pulled into a parking space and went up to my apartment. Setting my purse on the table by the front door, I kicked off my shoes and then pulled out my phone.
